Home is just a state of mind

My Role: visual design, animation

Project Type: solo project

Project Overview: A motion graphics piece depicting the theme of 'finding home' inspired by a short monologue from the T.V. series Dexter, season 7 Episode 8 Antarctica.

The Monologue

No matter where we go, we take ourselves and our damage with us
So is home the place we run to, or is it the place we run from?
Only to hide out in places where we are accepted, unconditionally
Places that feel more like home to us
Because we can finally be who we are

Concept

The idea behind this animation was to represent us, humans, as waves moving forward through the journey of life. Everyone wants a place where 'the slate is wiped clean' that is to start new, but the truth is we take our emotional baggage referred to as 'damage' with us wherever we go.

All in all, he means 'HOME' is a state of mind, humans are at peace where they find the warmth and comfort of home wherever they go.

Inspiration

I was instantly drawn towards the blood texture, fluidity of it, its bright color. The major use of plastic wrap was another point of inspiration. Both of these elements portrayed the transparency aspect.

Storyboard

The main aim was to represent the wave mold and pass through different phases of life. Since the wave represented humans, following it throughout the storyboard ties the whole story together.

Style Frames

Micheal C. Hall, the serial killer and the protagonist and the narrator of this monologue keeps referring to his 'dark' side throughout the series and hence to complement the bright red color associated with blood and murder I chose to go with a deep blue hue.

The ultimate aim was to represent the distinct contrast between his sharp weapons and his calm soothing voice.

Takeaways

I am a believer in the power of storytelling, people connect with motion pieces almost instantly if they see it being told as a story. It was challenging for me to convey my story clearly with minimal visual elements and by keeping the focus of the motion project to be the type.
